After enduring a bleak few months, the UK appears poised for a warm spell, as meteorologists predict clearing drizzle and temperatures rising to the high teens nationwide.
Although some chilly conditions persist through the weekend, with most areas not surpassing 12°C until Tuesday evening, residents of Manchester and the North-West can anticipate a milder 15°C by Sunday. Thermometers are expected to linger in the mid-teens for the next two weekends, but by midday on Monday, May 13th, southern England and northern Scotland are forecasted to break the 20°C mark.
Southern England is set to glow yellow on weather maps as temperatures soar past 21°C in Surrey and Hampshire, while areas of Somerset and Wiltshire peak at 20°C. Parts of Gloucestershire, East Wales, and regions around Inverness in Scotland are also in for a warm spell, signaling the arrival of summer in the UK.
However, amid the pleasant outlook, residents of southern England were startled awake by thunderstorms in the early hours, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across London, parts of the south, and parts of Wales until 10 am. Downpours and thunder struck around 5 am, with numerous lightning flashes reported. Minor flooding and travel disruptions are expected, though the extent remains uncertain.
While the warning initially expired at 8 am, the Met Office extended it by two hours as thunderstorms persisted before gradually moving westward. Fortunately, stormy conditions are expected to ease, with all weather warnings set to conclude today and none anticipated in the coming days.
Looking ahead to May 6th through May 15th, the Met Office’s long-range forecast predicts generally warm weather with scattered showers. High pressure is anticipated to bring dry and fine conditions for most areas, with a chance of rain or showers in the west. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly above normal for early May, with sunnier conditions in the south and potentially cloudier skies in the north and east.
