The cloud computing division of tech giant Amazon has announced job layoffs that would impact hundreds of employees.
As of its most recent financial report, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been increasing and currently accounts for 14% of the company’s overall revenue.
Since the 2020 debut of Amazon Fresh, a physical store, the corporation has been modifying its approach.
It announced on Tuesday that it would discontinue Just Walk Out, its self-checkout system, from every shop.
The company reported that several hundred positions in sales, marketing, and worldwide services as well as a few hundred positions in its physical store technology team are affected by the most recent job layoffs.
An AWS spokeswoman told the BBC that “these decisions are difficult but necessary as we continue to invest, hire, and optimise resources to deliver innovation for our customers.”
There are thousands of jobs available, and the company is striving to create internal possibilities for employees whose functions are affected. The company also stated that “it will continue to hire and grow, especially in core areas of our business.”
Although most AWS jobs are located in Seattle, the company’s home city, Amazon said that it will be making layoffs at its businesses worldwide.
According to the corporation, US-based workers would get transitional health insurance, assistance in seeking new employment, and salary and benefits for at least 60 days. Additionally, they will be qualified for severance money.
Excluding contractors and temporary staff, Amazon employed about 1.5 million people full-time and part-time as of the end of the previous year.
With AWS, Amazon has been concentrating on artificial intelligence (AI). Last month, the company invested in the safety and research start-up Anthropic.
Giants in technology are vying with one another to advance their AI skills. One such player is Microsoft, which has invested in ChatGPT.
Hundreds of positions were eliminated by Amazon in January from its subsidiaries MGM Studios, Twitch, and Prime Video. A third of Twitch’s workforce, or more than 500 workers, were let go.
US employment consulting firm Challenger, Grey & Christmas reports that the tech industry eliminated 168,032 jobs in 2023, a 73% increase from 2022.
