A Supreme Court of Brazil judge starts investigating Musk
A Brazilian Supreme Court judge opened an investigation against Elon Musk after the multibillionaire declared he would restore accounts on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that the judge had ordered be disabled.
Mr. Musk declared on the platform that the limitations had been removed due to the unconstitutionality of the court ruling.
He also demanded of Justice Alexandre de Moraes, “Resign or be impeached.”
If X disregards the order, it will be penalised 100,000 reais ($19,774; £15,670) every day.
In his decision, Justice Moraes claimed that Mr. Musk had launched a disinformation effort against the Supreme Court.
The Global Government Affairs team of the platform states that the company was not allowed to disclose which accounts were affected.
“X will publish everything demanded by [Moraes] and how those requests violate Brazilian law,” Mr. Musk tweeted later.
It is believed that the profiles are linked to far-right movements that disseminated information regarding the riots that broke out on January 8, 2018, when hundreds of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro assaulted the country’s Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace.
Justice Moraes rose to prominence after deciding to put limitations on social media sites across the country.
He is also investigating the possibility of Mr. Bolsonaro and his associates being involved in a coup attempt.
On Saturday, a video of the May 2022 encounter between Mr. Musk and the former president was released.
Additionally, Mr. Bolsonaro asked his supporters to gather a few hours early on April 21.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk was reprimanded by Brazil’s minister of communications, Paulo Pimenta, who wrote in capital letters, “Social networks are not a lawless land.”
He declared, “We will not allow anyone to affront our homeland, regardless of the money and power they have.”
If X decides to challenge the ruling, the site might be suspended in the interim, according to Bruna Santos, global campaigns manager at nonprofit group Digital Action.
She said, “Musk acted to provoke the Brazilian judiciary.” “I believe there’s a good chance X will be blocked.”
